Behind the Cliffhanger: How a 90-Second Episode Is Written

A short drama episode has roughly ninety seconds to do three things: remind you where you are, raise the stakes, and leave you hanging.

Writers usually start with the cliffhanger and work backwards. Every line of dialogue has to earn its place, and every scene ends a beat earlier than you expect.

Vertical framing

Because episodes are watched on phones, directors frame close-ups and keep subtitles above the on-screen controls.
